Thoughts on the Anniversary of the End of the War: Defense Minister Koizumi’s Visit to Yasukuni Shrine and Prayers for Peace]
今日は終戦記念日です。
日本では、戦争で亡くなった方々が靖国神社に眠っているため、「戦争」といえば靖国神社が思い浮かべられます。
当時、戦地へ向かう若い人たちは「靖国で会おう」と言葉を交わして出征していきました。つまり、彼らは常に死を意識しながら戦場に向かっていたのです。
ですが、国の代表である歴代の総理大臣たちは、外交問題に発展するため、公式にはなかなか参拝に行くことができません。
私は思うのです。ここに眠っているのは、何の罪もない普通の国民たちだと。
まだ10代や20代という若さで命を失った、普通の国民たちです。どの時代のどんな戦争であっても、本当は誰も戦争などしたくなかったはずです。
それほどまでに多くの尊い命が失われたというのに、いまだに地球上から戦争はなくなりません。
この終戦記念日にあたり、心から平和を祈りつつ、参拝に赴いた小泉防衛大臣に敬意を示したいと思います。
Thoughts on the Anniversary of the End of the War: Defense Minister Koizumi’s Visit to Yasukuni Shrine and Prayers for Peace
Today is the anniversary of the end of World War II.
In Japan, those who perished in the war rest at Yasukuni Shrine, which is why the shrine is deeply associated with the memory of the war.
At that time, young people heading off to the battlefields would tell each other, “Let’s meet at Yasukuni.” In other words, they went to war with the constant awareness of death.
However, successive prime ministers, as representatives of the nation, are rarely able to visit officially because it often develops into a diplomatic issue.
I cannot help but think about the ordinary citizens who sleep here—innocent people who lost their lives in their teens and twenties. In any war, no matter the era, these were ordinary citizens who never wanted to fight.
Even though so many precious lives were lost, wars still do not disappear from this earth.
On this day commemorating the end of the war, while praying from the bottom of my heart for peace, I wish to express my respect to Defense Minister Koizumi for his visit to the shrine.
