I am deeply shocked and angered by the news of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington D.C. yesterday.
The suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, has been taken into custody. What surprised me most was his background. He graduated from the world-renowned California Institute of Technology (Caltech) with a master’s degree. He was even a teacher—someone who was supposed to guide children.
Looking at the news, I couldn’t help but wonder: “Why would someone so highly educated and elite choose to take a human life?”
Knowledge and intelligence should be used to improve oneself and make others happy. No matter how “smart” or “elite” a person is, if they try to take someone’s life, they are the lowest of the low. To me, the moment you disrespect life, all your academic achievements become meaningless.
I value my daily life—studying English, practicing ballet and pilates, and spending peaceful time with my cats, Ohagi, Latte, and Mocha. It breaks my heart to see someone use their intelligence for such destructive violence.
Learning is wonderful, but having a heart that understands the value of life and the pain of others is much more important than any degree.
昨日ワシントンの夕食会で起きたトランプ氏の事件のニュースを見て、私は強い憤りを感じています。
犯人のコール・トーマス・アレンが拘束されましたが、何より驚いたのは彼の経歴です。彼は世界屈指の名門校であるカリフォルニア工科大学（カルテック）を卒業し、修士号まで持っています。しかも子供たちを導く立場の「教師」でもありました。
ニュースを見ながら、私は疑問と怒りが止まりませんでした。
**「なぜ、これほど勉強ができて立派な肩書きがあるエリートが、人の命を奪おうなんていう最低なことをするのか」**ということです。
知識や知能というのは、本来、自分を高め、誰かを幸せにするために使うべきものです。どんなに学業が優秀で「エリート」だとしても、他人の命を軽んじた瞬間に、人間として最低だと思います。命を尊重できないのなら、どんな学歴も無意味です。
私は今、英語を学び、バレエやピラティスを楽しみ、愛猫のおはぎ、ラテ、モカと穏やかに過ごす毎日を大切にしています。だからこそ、知性を破壊的な暴力に使ったことが許せません。
学ぶことは素晴らしいですが、それ以上に「命の尊さ」を知り、人の痛みがわかる心を持つこと。それこそが、どんな学問よりも先に身につけるべき大切なことなのだと、改めて強く感じました。
