昨日、アメリカから衝撃的なニュースが飛び込んできました。
ホワイトハウスの記者会主催の晩餐会で、トランプ氏が登壇する直前に銃撃事件が起きたというニュースです。
トランプ氏やメラニア夫人は無事だったとのことで胸をなでおろしましたが、ニュース映像を見ていて、心から驚くと同時に、何とも言えない不安を感じました。
「晩餐会」でも安全ではないという現実
まず驚いたのは、その場所です。
大統領や政府の要人が集まる「晩餐会」といえば、最高レベルの警備が行われているはずの場所。それなのに、入り口の検査場付近で発砲が起きるなんて、日本では到底考えられません。
「アメリカは銃社会だ」とは知識として知っていても、こうして極めてフォーマルで安全であるべき場所までが暴力の影にさらされるのを見ると、そのリスクの根深さを改めて突きつけられた気がします。
保安検査は一体どうなっていたのでしょうか？
どんなに厳重にチェックをしても、一瞬の隙や「検査を受ける前の場所」を狙われたら防ぎきれない……。そんな銃社会の恐ろしさを感じずにはいられません。
荒れていく世界への不安
最近のニュースを見ていると、今回の事件だけでなく、どこか「世界が荒れてきている」と感じることが増えました。
政治的な対立や意見の食い違いが、言葉による対話ではなく、暴力や攻撃という形になって表れてしまう。そんな負のエネルギーが、世界中に広がっているような気がしてなりません。
日本の日常を見つめ直して
日本に住んでいると、どこへ行くにも「銃声を心配する」なんてことはまずありません。でも、海の向こうで起きているこの出来事は、決して他人事ではない「今の世界の空気」を映し出しているように思います。
「当たり前の平和」が、実はとても脆く、貴重なものであること。
そして、どんなに意見が違っても、暴力に頼らない社会がいかに大切か。
今回のニュースは、そんなことを深く考えさせられる出来事でした。

Yesterday, a shocking news report came out of the United States. During the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, gunshots were fired just before Donald Trump was set to take the stage.
I was relieved to hear that both Mr. Trump and Melania were unharmed, but watching the news left me feeling deeply unsettled and incredibly surprised.
Safety Even at a Gala?
As someone living in Japan, the first thing that shocked me was the location. A presidential gala is supposed to be one of the most secure events in the world. To think that a shooting could happen near the security screening area is almost unthinkable from a Japanese perspective.
We often hear that America is a “gun society,” but seeing violence reach such a formal and high-profile event makes me realize how deep-rooted this issue truly is. I can’t help but wonder—how did the security fail? It’s terrifying to think that even with strict checks, nowhere is 100% safe.
A World Growing More Turbulent
Looking at the news lately, I feel that the world is becoming increasingly turbulent. It seems like political disagreements are no longer settled through dialogue, but are instead turning into physical violence and attacks. This negative energy feels like it’s spreading across the globe.
Appreciating Our Daily Peace
Living in Japan, we don’t usually have to worry about the sound of gunfire in our daily lives. However, this event across the ocean reflects the “current atmosphere” of our world.
It reminded me that the peace we take for granted is actually quite fragile and precious. It also made me feel strongly that we must strive for a society where we don’t rely on violence, no matter how much our opinions differ.
